Why Riprap Holds Bass
Riprap is one of the most dependable bass structures because it attracts forage and creates irregular ambush spots. Crawfish live around the rocks. Shad use riprap during spawning windows and windy feeding periods. Bluegill may also cruise the edges.
That means riprap is not one pattern. It is a place where multiple forage patterns overlap.
Shad Pattern on Riprap
Use a shad pattern when you see bait flickering, wind blowing into the rocks, or bass feeding high. Spinnerbaits, small swimbaits, squarebills, and walking baits can all work.
Parallel the riprap whenever possible. A parallel cast keeps the lure in the strike zone and helps you find the depth where bass are sitting.

Craw Pattern on Riprap
Use crawfish patterns when bass are tight to the bottom, the water is cooler, or there is no visible bait. Jigs, craw crankbaits, shaky heads, and Texas-rigged craws are strong choices.
Let the lure contact rock, but do not drag it mindlessly into every crack. Lift, pause, and crawl it through the highest-percentage sections.

Common Mistake
Many anglers fish riprap too fast with one lure. Start with a reaction bait, then follow with a jig or soft plastic if you get short strikes or see fish but cannot hook them.
