Natural Bass Lure Colors: Green Pumpkin, Black Blue, White, and Red

You do not need every color to catch bass. Learn when to use four proven lure color families and why they work.

Color Choice Can Be Simple

Bass anglers love color debates, but most trips can be covered with four reliable color families: green pumpkin, black-blue, white, and red or orange craw. These colors match common forage situations without overloading your tackle box.

The key is choosing color based on water clarity, forage, and light conditions.

Green Pumpkin

Green pumpkin is the most versatile natural soft plastic and jig color. It works around bluegill, crawfish, grass, docks, and clear to stained water. If you are unsure what bass are eating, green pumpkin is rarely wrong.

Black and Blue

Black-blue creates a strong silhouette. Use it in muddy water, low light, heavy cover, and around dark vegetation. It is especially dependable for jigs and Texas rigs.

White and Pearl

White, pearl, and shad tones are best when bass are feeding on baitfish. Use them for spinnerbaits, swimbaits, jerkbaits, swim jigs, and topwaters. Browse the shad page when baitfish are the main forage.

Red and Orange Craw

Red and orange tones shine around rock, warming water, and crawfish activity. They are especially useful in prespawn and early spring, but muted orange accents can work all year.

The prespawn craw kit is a good seasonal option.

Quick Color Table

| Situation | Color Family |

|-------|-------|

| Clear water bluegill | Green pumpkin |

| Muddy water cover | Black-blue |

| Shad activity | White or pearl |

| Rock and crawfish | Red or orange craw |

Final Tip

Do not change colors before changing location or retrieve. Color matters, but bass must first see the lure in the right place.
